Nine album in, Kutless would likely stand in the Christian rock pantheon, were someone to create such a structure. Chart-topping singles, a gold album and numerous national tours make any Kutless release worth checking out, and the band stays true to form on Surrender, their latest modern rock release.
“Tear It Up” opens the album with a stadium-ready anthem, while “Bring It On” settles in with a solid pop radio single. Both songs should serve radio well. The band’s version of “One Thing Remains” brings a worshipful refrain to a mix that’s already steeped in core biblical truths. “My Heart is a Ghost” ends the album with the most interesting tune, with a slight Alice In Chains leaning (“Would?”) that hints at what a darker turn by the band could sound like in the future.
