Matt Redman – ‘Glory Song,’ album review

Considered one if its pioneers, Matt Redman is entrenched in the growing and young history of the modern worship movement. This certainly has not prevent him, however, from continually moving outside of the box, especially on his newest recording, Glory Song (buy). Not following the overall sonic pattern of recent worship album successes—trendy keyboard-candy and loopy electric guitaring—instead, Redman keeps and showcases a more sophisticated, reverent sound. Collaboration with artists not routinely featured in mainstream praise and worship arenas, namely black gospel stalwarts Kierra Sheard (opener “All Glory”) and Tasha Cobbs Leonard (on the anthemic “Gracefully Broken”), youngster Madison Cunningham (“Redemption Ground”), Jesus Culture‘s Kim Walker-Smith (on the reflective “Place Of Praise”) and throw in a hip hop verse from Guvna B (“Gospel Song”), and Glory Song really begins to sound like the body—they whole body. Emulating the sounds of Glory by bringing heaven down to earth, Redman’s latest offering could prove to be a landmark in his celebrated catalogue.
