Progressive rock may be Neal Morse’s primary bread-and-butter either as a solo artist or member of Spock’s Beard, Transatlantic and Flying Colors, but that hasn’t stopped this prolific artist from tapping into his singer-songwriter side every once in a while. Though it’s an obvious lane change from those regularly scheduled experimentations, he’s more than capable of turning to stripped down acoustic pop with thought-provoking storytelling. Whether focusing on growing older, his extensive travels, spiritual reflections or a series of gripping narratives (perhaps most notably, “He Died At Home” about a young soldier’s struggles after coming home from war), Morse commands attention, even without all his usual instrumental wizardry.
