We’ve all been there as artists and musicians: in that place where we feel ‘ready’ and ‘prepared’ to move forward with our careers; make it big, or at least make a living, and yet God is still saying: “Wait”. How do we reconcile our frustration and impatience with the still, small voice inside of us that tells us to simply “Trust”?
This has been a recurring theme for me the last several weeks as I look ahead to the birth of my first baby. We only have 4 more weeks to go and the anticipation is killing my husband and I. We want so badly to look at each other and say: “Wanna have this baby tonight?” and then be able to do it. It would allow us to take the guesswork out of the timing of the birth and put the control right into our own hands. Conversely, it takes all of the mystery out of the process and erases the need for faith in God’s timing and plan; and yet an internal war still rages on. How do we trust in His sovereignty when our own timing is always at the forefront of our minds?
In these instances, I like to refer to the wise words of a fellow musician:
“I was placed in your care from birth. From my Mother’s womb, you have been my God.” Psalm 22:10
When we get so caught up in planning our fabulous futures and careers, it helps to force the mind to go back to the beginning, rather than any further forward. The simple reminder of who has cared for us since our own beginning is humbling and helps to recalibrate our priorities. God has chosen us by name, since before we were formed in the secret place; and sometimes we forget that our only job here on earth is simply to serve Him in any capacity He chooses. When we remember that and surrender our own desires and timing, the opposing sides of our internal war, sign an armistice.
Rather than go on about patience, hope and the building of character, I thought it was appropriate to remind ourselves to whom we belong and why we are here to begin with. Just as the growth of a baby is shrouded in mystery and secrecy inside of its mother, so is the growth and development of our careers; giving us yet another opportunity to trust outside of our comfort zone and remember who is in control. And if that doesn’t work, singing a couple rounds of “I Surrender All” might do the trick.☺
