Two Are Better Than One

For Beckah Shae, life has never been ordinary. This out-of-the-box woman warrior for love has taken the “status quo” for the Christian artist and exceeded all expectation. Best known for “Put Your Love Glasses On” song and video explosion, Beckah Shae’s beat driven songs sounding like they’ve come straight from mainstream radio are full of love-inspired lyrics that awaken and inspire the church.

While Beckah Shea is a creative genius, she certainly doesn’t work alone. Her partner in music is also her partner in life, Jack “Shocklee.” The two met in 2003 to collaborate on a track and have been working together ever since.

“Despite what people may think, we actually really love working together. We wake up and spend all day together. We truly love and respect each other and never get tired of being together,” Beckah says.

They work together so well, in fact, that together they started Shae Shoc Records, a vision and business they both attribute straight to God.

“Most people hear from God and then begin thinking of everything they need, like labels or other people, but for us, we’ve just listed to God every step of the way. We listened to His direction and made plans. We knew his purpose would prevail,” Beckah says.

While most independent artists work towards a label, Jack and Beckah have always valued freedom, both in music and ministry.

“For the way Beckah is designed, freedom is a priority. A show isn’t just a show, it’s a ministry, and she needs to be able to do whatever she feels like God wants to do,” Jack says of Beckah.

Hearing and responding to God is something that has always been imperative in Beckah’s life. Growing up in and out of battered women shelters, she always felt misjudged and misunderstood. But because God constantly pursued her heart, she was finally able to see herself the way that God sees her. This revelation seems to inspire all aspects of her life, especially in the way she sees and views life.

Destiny is her latest project and when asked what the heart of the album was, Beckah laughs and says its one big “blow of the shofar!”

“This album really is an urgent plea to awaken the church with a righteous anger, to tell believers to keep on fighting and pushing and to constantly think about the prize, Beckah says.

While this project was accomplished in only six-months, it’s guaranteed you won’t find anything like “Are You Ready?” and “Gold” on any other CCM album. Perhaps it’s the cutting-edge, no holds barred attitude of Jack and Beckah.

“I always go first and lay down a track,” says Jack. “Then Beckah gets on ProTools and a mic and actually does all her own vocal producing. When she’s finished, I go back in and finish the mix.”

While the duo has had many highlights in their fast-moving career like being nominated for Urban Recorded Song of the Year for “Life” in the 42nd Annual GMA Dove Awards, both say that being trailblazers in the industry has been unforgettable.

“Everyone says that ‘four-on-the-floor’ would never be on Christian radio. We’re doing what everyone said isn’t even supposed to happen. And we’ve had 2 top 10 singles,” says Jack.

Next on the agenda for Shae Shoc is the upcoming releases of a Scripture Snack album, a unique creation of Beckah’s to help people memorize scripture, and a Christmas single.
