Evensong: Hymns and Lullabies at the Close of Day
(Getty Music)
Imagine yourself as a young child, armed with all you now know about Christian music. Which singer would you first ask to sing you to sleep with a set of lullabies? If you’re anything like me, Kristyn Getty’s voice/name comes immediately to mind. These 13 songs, which include both familiar and unfamiliar works, many times feature Kristyn Getty doing what she does best, which is gently and comfortingly singing about the love of Jesus.
In some instances, these songs take on new meanings within this album’s relaxed nighttime music context. For example, “Softly And Tenderly – Ahsokan Farewell,” which may be more familiar to some as a church service invitational, feels more like a campfire Civil War ballad (especially with its warm fiddling) here. It’s even better because Vince Gill adds his pure singing voice to its arrangement. “Is He Worthy” is most lullaby-esque because a children’s choir provides the response to Kristyn Getty’s call within its vocal arrangement. Best of all is “Consider The Stars,” which adds lush orchestration following its rolling acoustic piano intro. Not everything is specifically crib-ready, however, as Heather Headley helps bring an extra dosage of Gospel music power to “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.”
Evensong is sure to calm the nerves of little ones at day’s end. And hey, moms and dads will probably appreciate its sonic cleansing breath, just about as much.
