Jeremy Camp — Q&A about ‘I Will Follow’

After a long track record of success, how will Jeremy’s new record I Will Follow (buy) compare to his previous recordings? For an answer, let’s ask the man himself in this brief two-question Q&A with Jeremy Camp.

CCM Magazine: You stated that you have stretched the boundaries on I Will Follow. How so?
JEREMY: “You know, I’ve been doing this a long time. You get to a point where you say, ‘Alright, do I have to do a certain thing?’ People know me a certain way. You ask yourself, ‘Do I still have the creativity?’ Once I felt God’s encouragement to continue in music, I knew He was going to give me the ability to creatively push the envelope.

I walked into the first writing session with Seth Mosley without an agenda. Regardless of the outcome or type of song, I just wanted to say what was going on in my heart.

We approached this record with a no-holds-barred attitude. That’s what makes this collection of songs dynamic. I know the passion behind my vocals, the heart inside each lyric, and the emotion and creativity in the overall production will be translated to the listener because we weren’t stifled by the pressures of needing to ‘do this’ or ‘do that.’”

CCM: As you compare what has worked as “Jeremy Camp” in the past to this recording, self-admittedly your most heart-led project, were there any fears during the creative process about how it would be received?
JC: “I’m more excited about music than ever before, but there were moments of wondering if it was all ‘too much.’ But He has done so much and there is a completely new level of depth in my heart, so I never pulled back — not once. If I felt something was going in a particular direction, I let it go there.

Yes, there were fearful moments at times. But I now experience a freedom from prior expectations and that has allowed me to push beyond those fears. I’ve grown up a lot since I first started — without question I now have a definitive vision on what God has called me to do.
