Brian Doerksen’s album Father’s House, originally released in May 1994, was his first solo concept album, breaking away from the familiar worship songs like Refiner’s Fire and Faithful One for which he was already widely known. Written in response to the ‘father-wound’ Brian observed in culture, the album explores the idea of God as “Abba – Father,” an intimate portrayal contrasting with the traditional, formal view of God. Inspired by the way Jesus spoke of God as a close, caring parent, Father’s House began as a collection of songs and later evolved into a full musical story, bringing depth to themes of fatherhood, healing, and divine love. Produced by Canadian pop hitmaker Paul Janz and now re-mastered by his nephew Philip Janz, the album had been out of print for two decades but continued to resonate deeply, prompting fans to urge Brian to re-release it for years.
In celebration of the 30th anniversary, Brian and his team are bringing Father’s House back with fresh additions, including new recordings of Father To Son and There Must Be A Place, as well as a new version of Stay from his Faithful One album. The story behind Father’s House unfolds with a magical encounter between a young man named Anthony and a mysterious old woman named Nellie in a mall. Handed a card with his name, Anthony is transported into a story through song, stirring something profound within him and revealing an invitation from a divine Father who has been waiting and longing for connection.
Brian Doerksen is celebrated worldwide for his music, which is sung in countless faith communities. With three JUNO album nominations and a win in 2008 for Holy God, he is recognized as a leading figure in Christian music. In 2014, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gospel Music Association of Canada, and his recent work, Christmas At Our House with Brian Doerksen & Friends, earned a LEO award for excellence in television and film in 2021. Brian’s 2021 release, Hymns For Life, a collection of timeless hymns, featured a moving collaboration with his father, Harry Doerksen. In May 2023, Brian performed at the prestigious Coronation Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England.
Brian’s recent singles, Every Dream (God Who Sees), co-released with pop artist Marika Siewert, and In Search Of, which is charting on Canadian Christian radio in spring 2024, continue to build his legacy. Living in Abbotsford, B.C. with his wife of 39 years, Joyce, Brian is not only an influential artist but also a devoted father to six adult children, including two sons with special needs. As he releases the 30th anniversary edition of Father’s House, Brian Doerksen continues to invite listeners to experience the healing love of a divine Father.
