Brenda Janz’s musical journey began in the quiet, rural landscapes of Nova Scotia, where her love for music was nurtured by the records of her older sister and the inspirations of classic artists like James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Fleetwood Mac. As a child, she would sneak her sister’s records for a secret listen, letting the melodies carry her through the ups and downs of her teenage years. Although she longed to learn an instrument, it wasn’t until her early twenties, while working overseas with a mission organization, that she finally picked up a guitar. It was in this community setting, focused on serving the poor, that Brenda started writing songs grounded in simplicity, capturing the common struggles and joys of life.

Upon returning to Canada, Brenda became actively involved in her local community, performing her heartfelt songs at food banks and soup kitchens, embracing a life that remains connected to everyday experiences. Brenda’s music reflects her deep desire to find beauty and meaning in the mundane, creating songs that resonate with listeners on a personal level. She believes that great songs belong to everyone, as they have the power to heal, inspire, and become a part of those who embrace them.

Brenda’s style naturally gravitates toward acoustic, folky, country sounds—genres that allow her to tell honest, sincere stories through her lyrics. Her journey led her to sing in church settings, collaborate on recordings, and join tours across Canada and Europe. Throughout her life, Brenda’s songwriting has remained a consistent thread, though she never pursued the spotlight with intense ambition. Instead, her focus shifted when she began her family, which became her greatest joy and inspiration. Her songs are now filled with reflections on family life, the love that surrounds her, and the simple yet profound moments that make life beautiful.

Her latest single, “Good to be Alive,” captures the essence of those joyful family moments. Written when her three older children were young, the song is a celebration of the deep joy that family relationships can bring. Inspired by the innocence and playful wonder of her children, Brenda’s lyrics remind us of the power of love and connection. The song is a testament to the belief that life, especially when surrounded by those we love, is truly good. Now based in Mission, BC, with her husband Philip, their four children, and their beloved border collie, Brenda continues to write music that speaks to the heart. With over 30 years of songwriting experience and two albums already under her belt, she is eagerly anticipating her third album, “Way of Life,” set for release in early 2025.
