Little by little our quiet time with God gets smaller, or our time with our church and our community gets smaller. Our time with our family gets smaller, because we end up thinking, “If we just get this one opportunity, then we’re going to be okay.” There’s a lyric on one of the songs on that EP where I mention that I hadn’t been to church in four months because I had been too busy chasing the “dream.” And that’s the trap, you know?
For the last project, By Any Means, I like to call it “new gospel” style. And, if I could put in parentheses, it would say (Chase God) By Any Means, because that’s the only way to break out of the trap. Like, you have to get off the hamster wheel and say, “Rather than chasing these things that won’t fulfill me, I have to make a detour, and I have to chase God—by any means.”
CCM: You referenced being on The Roadshow, but you’re about to be featured on a brand new tour coming up in September 2017. What can live audiences expect from you on the Big Church Night Out Tour?
DM: What I love about this tour is that it’s the most diverse as far as what it has to offer. I mean, they have an illusionist, a speaker, a rapper, Blanca—who’s doing this crazy pop stuff—Sidewalk Prophets, 7eventh Time Down, Newsboys… You have all these different bands, and it’s all going to be their version of church.
For me, I just want to take audiences into my version of what church sounds like. I think it’s cool that they have allow me to be a part, because often times people, when they think rap, it’s probably the lowest thing on the list that they think of as church music. So, for me to be able to come and honor God with my gift, it’s super dope. And my set, we’ve been putting a lot of work into the visuals and staging. It’s going to be crazy!
