CCM: Have you had any interesting interactions with Michael W. Smith?
GS: About three years ago when I was in Nashville for the first time at a writer’s retreat, on the last day we were told we were going to Michael W. Smith’s house for the recording of his new DVD, and I was like, “What?!” So there I am at Michael’s barn, and they put me in the front row and am weeping through this recording. Later I found out that I had made it into some of the footage.
So, a few weeks after, I get to go to his promo tour at a bookstore near us. I show up late with my wife and he’s in the middle of sharing his testimony and he says, “Hey, you’re the guy that’s all over my new DVD!” He then said, “Why don’t you stick around after…actually, we’ll just watch it.” So he goes to one of the songs and he’s showing the room how my face is on, like, every 20-seconds of his DVD! He then said, “You know what, you should come to my church next time your in Franklin and lead worship.” So I did. The first church that I ever lead worship at was in Franklin, Tennessee and there’s Michael in the front row, at his invitation.
You can’t make this stuff up.
