CCM: He’s the “$6 Million Dollar Bass Player!”
JS: Yeah! And he hasn’t had it come back now in two, two-and-a-half years at least. And every time he had that surgery, he was recovering for three or four months. But more than just him being healthier from a medical point of view, I saw he and his wife really grow together a lot in those times where he was struggling and recovering. He was like, “Well, yeah, I know that sometimes bad things happen to good people—but God, why does this keep coming back? What are you doing in my life in this situation?” To me, part of the miracle with Dan is, yes, he doesn’t have the tumor anymore and the medical expertise that allowed that to be the case is a miracle and is amazing. But also, God used that time to really help he and his wife grow in a number of things at home and spiritually and he came back a different person. I think it shook their faith a little bit. I think that’s a miracle, too—how God can take our difficulties and make something unexpected with them.
CCM: Should we count on God for miracles?
JS: I think we should expect miracles from God. And I would say a miracle is any time God intervenes in our lives. And I think He’s doing it constantly. The Bible says that He speaks in a still, small voice. And I find that to be true. When I think about miracles, I think about that. I think about God showing up in these little, tiny ways and there’s this string of His presence in our life, a thread that weaves through everything, and most of the time, we don’t see it. But I think of learning to see it as a skill that we can and should develop.
