When you’ve got a song that most of the Church is singing—”This is who Jesus is, this is what He does, this is what He thinks about us, this is how far He went to save us”—[laughs] in our church when we lead this song we call it a “cheat” because no matter what is going on in the service, it’s just gonna work, you know? Like you said, we live in a world that tries to squash our beliefs and squash our convictions, and what separates Jesus from the world is his incorruptible and unconditional love. I think people really resonate with that.
JG: I also think…you can sing about so much. You can petition God. There’s worship songs that are songs of petition, there’s worship songs about how much we are gonna praise God, and they’re all worship. They’re all aimed toward God, but I think there’s a real power in being in agreement together saying, “What a beautiful name, the name of Jesus” Actually worshipping the name of Jesus together. Corporately, I think there’s real power in that and I think that’s also a real point of resonation for people.
CCM: When we were thinking about the opportunity to talk with you guys, we remembered a funny GRAMMYs story we heard about Phil Collins running into Snoop Dogg in the bathroom at the awards show one year and Phil being so surprised that Snoop recognized him and even called him by name…
JG: Please tell me he said, “Mr. Dogg…” [Laughs]
BL: I’ve gotten the opportunity to know Tauren Wells a little, who was also nominated. He is such a legend. We know Natalie [Grant] and Bernie [Herms] a little as well, and they’re just the most pure-hearted people. I think all of us in at least our category are totally cheering each other on, there’s such a beautiful unity in the body of Christ right now, which we must fight to continue and to increase. But, definitely, the GRAMMYs were wild. I had so many people coming up to me all night from all genres.
