CCM: How old are you now?
JB: I will be 38 in July.
CCM: What was the ministry school?
JB: I went to Morningstar Ministry School, right outside of Charlotte, North Carolina.
CCM: Were the McMillans involved with that?
JB: Yeah, John Mark was there. I was also with Jonathan Helser. I used to drum for him and played on his first album. We all went to school together. I was a part of Morningstar Ministries for years—for almost 10 years. I was a worship leader there. Then we left Morningstar for a new church start in downtown Charlotte. John Mark’s dad was actually the pastor there, so a few of our friends left to start that, and I was a worship pastor there for five years before I moved out here to Redding, California.
CCM: How do you then enter the Bethel Music family?
JB: I had a relationship with Brian and Jenn [Johnson] for years, because they would come out to Morningstar to play conferences. I think I met them in 2007. John Mark was also a friend with those guys and also Jesus Culture, since they were coming out of the same stream. I was very connected with the whole group out here in Redding and my pastor, Robin, was also a good friend with Bill Johnson, the pastor here at Bethel. We’d come out and visit since we had those connections.
