I was in New York City this past week celebrating my daughter’s 10th birthday (which is why we didn’t have a Tuesday show… sorry y’all). We had a great time, and I was thinking about music the whole time, of course.
Here are three New York-based artists you need to get to know!
Andy Mineo
I mean, hopefully you’re already aware of this Reach Records rapper. He’s second only to Lecrae in his credibility in both the Christian rap world and in the mainstream hip-hop community. I’ve been a fan of his since songs like “You Can’t Stop Me” and “Paisano’s Wylin” and have followed him into his more introspective works like “Hear My Heart” and “Uncomfortable.” He gives NYC a shout-out on the regular.
Young Oceans
Brooklyn-based Young Oceans has captivated my heart, mind and attention ever since I heard their advent project. Their contemplative, calming music features the whispery vocals of songwriter Eric Marshall. “Come Holy One” is one of my favorites.
David Baloche
Recognize the last name? Yep, he’s the son of worship pioneer Paul Baloche, but don’t expect to hear the same kinds of praise anthems you’ll hear on a Sunday morning. Similar in vibe to Young Oceans, David Baloche — as reflected in his Labyrinth album — presents scriptural songs that are soothing and meditative. My favorite is “Nothing Can Separate.”
