CCM: What are some Sorbo family traditions?
KS: Every year we do a 1000-piece Christmas puzzle—we’ll pick out something scenic and beautiful, something like a Thomas Kinkade, we sit around and listen to Christmas tunes and drink hot chocolate… The thing I miss is the white Christmas. I grew up in Minnesota. I don’t miss the five months of winter, but I do miss that one week, or so [laughs].

CCM: Congrats on your current movie in theaters, Let There Be Light. So, how did this project officially get its start?
KS: My wife came up with the idea. She co-wrote it with Dan Gordon who’s a great writer. Dan was once up for an Academy Award for Original Screen Play. He wrote The Hurricane which starred Denzel Washington, Wyatt Earp featuring Kevin Costner, he’s a great writer. So when we finished Sean Hannity called me up out of the blue and said, “Hey, I wanna do a movie with you. I loved you in What If…, Soulsurfer, God’s Not Dead. Do you have something like that?” I said, “Yeah.” So, we flew to New York, pitched Let There Be Light to him, 30-minutes later he wrote a check. I mean, it’s very rare that money chases projects in this industry. So, for us to get this thing off the ground and shoot it within four months and have the movie on-screen within a year-and-a-half from inception is pretty impressive.

CCM: What’s your take on the emergence of faith-based films now becoming a major player in Hollywood?
KS: Well, I think there are a number of reasons as to why. I think first and foremost, Hollywood puts out so much negative material. Very sexual, very violent, very…the agenda they wanna push, it’s very socialistic in a way—communistic in a way [laughs]. A lot of the movies, again, it’s a celebration of being a bad person. The hero is thrown out the window and they want to celebrate the anti-hero. That started back in the ’60s but, it’s just so blatant now. Technology now is so much cheaper in terms of cameras you can get and how small they are. Look at the GoPro, it’s unbelievable. There’s also so many people in the industry now looking for work, so they want to get involved. They want to work and they’ll find projects in these faith-based movies.

Another reason is that I think the story lines are getting so much better. They’re not cheesy like they used to be. Yes, some preach to the choir and some get too far. It’s funny, with Let There Be Light, I’m getting all sorts of reactions. We’re getting hundreds of emails every day from people saying things like, “Wow, that’s too ‘Christian!’” or “Oh, it’s not ‘Christian’ enough!” You just have to laugh and realize that you can’t please everybody. It’s just in the nature of the game and I don’t worry about that. [I think] we put out a really good movie.
