Scripture: “As they talked and discussed things, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.” (Luke 24:15-16)
Reflection: Backdrop: Jesus had just risen from the dead. He could have been doing anything He wanted to, including hosting a major celebration in Heaven! Instead, He chose to appear to a few friends on earth, including two men walking along the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-32). It’s a fascinating story of how He joins them incognito and feigns ignorance of the recent Passover events. Yet He consoles the men by opening up the truth of the Scriptures and prophesies. Later they invite Him in and He obliges. He opens their eyes and reveals Himself through the breaking of the bread.
God is like that: He could be doing anything, but He chooses to walk alongside His children! And it doesn’t matter how broken, wretched, or needy we are. It doesn’t matter how low or despicable we feel. He wants our hearts to heal. He wants to rescue us and reveal His truth – His tender mercies, faithful forgiveness and enduring love.
And if we invite Jesus in, He’ll oblige. He’ll open our eyes and we’ll know… that it was Him who had been walking with us… all this time!
