7Core Music Singer/songwriter Foldinglights (Michael Peter Ball) has released the second single “American Jesus” off of his debut album Subterranean Hum, which is due out later this year.
Americana meets Industrial Synthpop—the song questions if we’ve made Jesus into our own image. Do we believe Jesus has choosesn whichever political party or social agenda we identify with? Do we believe Jesus would only hang about the most gentrified or hippest part of town drinking artisan coffee?
The question asked here is do we really know the Jesus of the Bible, or like the religious people of His day, are we trying to make Him into something that suits our own lifestyles?
“American Jesus” lyrics
Verse one
Grinding down another day
starving for some help
To Wash away the dirt
Now these legs have turned to pulp
Chorus
Looking for my white American Jesus
(we’ve been wandering around for you)
Looking for my white Political Jesus
(we’ve been wandering around for you)
Searching for my white hipster Jesus
(we’ve been wandering around for you)
Maybe you will find him in the concave of your heart
Verse two
Is God is really there?
Then why do I feel alone?
Friends they work on circumstance,
And I can’t count on their love
Chorus
Looking for my white American Jesus
(we’ve been wandering around for you)
Looking for my white Political Jesus
(we’ve been wandering around for you)
Searching for my white hipster Jesus
(we’ve been wandering around for you
Maybe you will find him in the concave of your heart)
Bridge
I found Jesus in the poor and broken souls
I found Jesus in those with no social code
I found Jesus in the torn up family homes
I found Jesus in the places you won’t go
Final chorus
Searching for my white American Jesus
Searching for my white Political Jesus
Searching for my white hipster Jesus
Maybe I will find him in the concave of my heart
