Facing Fear: Step Out in Faith and Rise Above What’s Holding You Back is available now from Christian book publisher Thomas Nelson. The book was written by Nik Wallenda, face of “The Great Wallendas” (the famous circus family famous for performing crazy feats without safety nets) and co-authored with 11-time New York Times bestselling author Don Yaeger.
With his daring televised tightrope walks over Times Square, Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, and most recently over the active Masaya Volcano (2020), Wallenda is known for pushing the envelope and identifying new, iconic locations around the globe to conquer. He takes stepping out in faith to a whole new level and shares the lessons he’s learned along the way.
Facing Fear is a practical guide to overcoming fears that unpacks the life of the seventh-generation member of The Great Wallendas who had never experienced fear until a tragic accident in 2017, when an eight-person pyramid he and several members of Wallenda’s family were practicing collapsed, and five of its members fell thirty feet to the ground. Miraculously, they all survived, but the accident changed Wallenda’s life forever. For the first time, he felt fear, and he had to learn to get past it to get back out on the wire.
Featuring a foreword written by New York Times best-selling author and the world’s defacto business and leadership authority, John C. Maxwell, Facing Fear is a reader-centric memoir, interweaving parts of Wallenda’s personal story of the accident and how he conquered his fear with practical advice for readers to overcome whatever fears are holding them back.
“I want to help everyday people step out in faith even when they’re afraid,” says Wallenda. “Most of us will never walk a tightrope, but we face things that scare us every day. Whether putting ourselves out there socially or seeking a dream job, all of us allow anxieties and fears to hold us back.”
As an aerialist—a wire walker— who makes a living by placing one foot in front of the other and trusting his training and skill to keep him alive, Wallenda shares numerous stories about the valuable lessons he’s learned along the way, revealing ways others can face and overcome their fears including:
Silencing Shame (“no one will understand”)
Facing Your Fear (being bold and calling your fear by name!)
Finding Your Footing (it takes perseverance, faith, integrity, and positivity)
Walking Towards Healing (rebuilding trust)
Taking Fresh Steps of Faith (resurrecting your dreams)
Wallenda’s life motto is “never give up,” and he carries this positive message with him in every walk with the purpose of “inspiring people around the world to follow their dreams.”
