Singer-songwriter John Ellis picks right up where his former band, the Dove Award-winning Tree63, left off with its final hurrah Land (CCM Magazine‘s No. 1 album of 2015). On Growing Silent (buy), Ellis reveals more contemplative lyrical expressions as he openly sings about his questions in faith, while cathartically responding with the same in statements of hope in God. Summed up best on “This Love,” Ellis boldly offers, “I’ve been captivated, swept away, I’ve done ungodly things in Jesus’ name / I’ve hid from Your protection, I’ve made death bed confessions / Still You hold Your hand to me, still I see You waiting patiently.” Another gem to this collection are two co-writes with longtime friend Matt Redman on tracks “Hope Springs Eternal,” “Rose Again” and “Anywhere And Everywhere.” Add in a re-make of Land‘s “If God,” a truly magnificent worship anthem, and Growing Silent gives us much hope that Ellis’ days of making and recording music are just beginning.
