Matt Maher ‘The Advent of Christmas’ Album Review

Matt Maher
The Advent of Christmas
(Provident)

Bringing something fresh and new to the Christmas music table is a greater challenge than it may seem but it’s something that Matt Maher, author of such great tracks like “Your Grace Is Enough” and “Hold Us Together,” has no trouble managing on his first ever Christmas record, The Advent of Christmas. With holiday songs both old and new, the album offers up a fresh take on the familiar sounds of the season.

Yuletide classics are in the minority here, but of those offered, Maher’s playful jazz-infused take on “Jingle Bells” shines brightest while the Irish-infused pennywhistles deliver on “Hark The Herald Angels Sing.” Those tones echo the haunting notes of original opener “Gabriel’s Message” as tracks like “He Shall Reign” and “Glory (Let There Be Peace)” deliver with warm, shiny energy and solid lyricism. But it’s the uniquely sparse arrangement of “Hope For Everyone” and its powerful message for all that steals the show, making it a must-listen alongside “Always Carry You,” with a heartening guest spot from Amy Grant.

With a little something for everyone, Matt Maher’s The Advent of Christmas is an album that will be joining Christmas playlists for years to come.
