Solar
nobigdyl’s Solar is the breath of fresh air that Christian hip-hop needs. In a genre full of heaviness, nobigdyl does something that few attempt—he has fun. Solar is, above all else, a great time. But, just because it’s fun, that doesn’t mean that nobigdyl only raps about fluff. There are serious relational, theological, and emotional issues in view here. nobigdyl’s collaboration with WHATUPRG, “be a man,” covers the tendency of men to eschew maturity in favor of staying young. “pressure” is a look at depression and the stresses that pile on us. But even with these serious themes, he’s obviously having a blast the whole time. With clever hooks that borrow from all musical types, nobigdyl has created a rangy, diverse, and robust album. This is a record that advances the genre, and it’s one we’ll remember as one of the finest of the year.
